Chlamydia is a topic many people feel uncomfortable talking about. Finding definitive, understandable information about it online can be difficult as well. It’s a common condition, though. By some accounts, as many as four million people in the United States alone develop chlamydia infections each year.

With that being the case, raising awareness about chlamydia and ensuring more people understand it is essential. Here, we’ll talk about the condition and its symptoms. We’ll also discuss typical chlamydia discharge appearance, what’s normal and what’s not, and other details to help you better understand what to look for and when to be concerned about the symptoms you’re having.

What Is Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection that can be spread through vaginal, anal, and oral contact. It’s caused by Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria. It can affect the urethra, cervix, ovaries, prostate, and other parts of the reproductive system.

One of the dangerous things about this infection is that it doesn’t always cause symptoms right away. People can have the infection for weeks, months, or even years without experiencing symptoms. In fact, some people never develop symptoms at all.

That being said, chlamydia can still be transmitted without outward signs that it’s present. Because of that, people can spread it without even realizing they have it. That’s one of the main reasons why regular testing and using protection are important.

When Symptoms Appear

Not everyone who has chlamydia goes without symptoms. When they do arise, they can include painful urination, discomfort during sex, testicular pain for men, and bleeding between periods for women. Some people develop serious long-term complications as well, including pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility.

Chlamydia can also cause a discharge. The appearance of the discharge may vary depending on several factors. Those differences can tell you whether the discharge is normal or a sign of a serious complication.

What Does Chlamydia Discharge Look Like?

The discharge caused by chlamydia can look different for men and women. For women, it’s often yellow or greenish and fairly thick. It can also be watery but have an odor. For men, the discharge is often cloudy white or yellow, but it may also be clear. For both men and women, the discharge may be heavy or barely noticeable.

What Does the Appearance of Chlamydia Discharge Mean?

Chlamydia discharge is typically thin and clear or slightly milky. That’s fairly normal, and it often occurs early on in the infection. It may appear randomly or during sexual arousal. It doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a new problem developing that you should be concerned about. If the color or consistency changes, though, that could be a sign of trouble.

White Discharge

White discharge isn’t overly abnormal, but it can be a cause for concern. White discharge can be thinner and runnier for men. In women, it’s often thicker, similar to a yeast infection. In either case, it can be a sign of worsening infection, and it needs extra medical attention.

Yellow or Green Discharge

Yellow or green discharge is even more serious. It usually means there’s pus mixed in, which is a surefire sign of infection. If the discharge has a greenish tinge, that may mean a more advanced infection. It can also indicate that another STI is present, such as gonorrhea.

Bloody or Brown Discharge

Bloody or brown discharge is more common in women. It’s often accompanied by spotting between periods or after sex. It’s a sign that the cervix is inflamed.

Additional Symptoms to Watch For

In addition to changes in discharge, you may notice newly developing or worsening symptoms. Those can include burning when you urinate, lower abdominal discomfort, pelvic pain, pain or selling in the testicles, and rectal discharge if you were exposed to chlamydia thorough anal sex. Changes in the odor of your discharge may also happen. Ordinarily, it doesn’t have a strong odor, but it can develop an unpleasant smell similar to fish or raw chicken.

Changes in the smell of your discharge or the symptoms you’re experiencing shouldn’t be ignored. That’s also the case if you start having more discharge than usual. Those are usually signs of inflammation or additional infections, and they should be addressed as soon as possible. If you notice those changes, be sure to contact a doctor right away.

It’s also important to note that when chlamydia is transmitted via oral sex, it can cause symptoms that often go overlooked. It can lead to a sore throat, redness or spots in the throat and mouth, pus pockets on the tonsils, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck. It can also cause an unusual discharge due to the infection, but it’s not quite as noticeable as it is in other cases. Symptoms like that are often mistaken for those of the common cold or strep throat, so people simply dismiss them.

Treating Chlamydia

Chlamydia can be treated and cured. Since it’s a bacterial infection, treatment requires antibiotics. Seeing a doctor if you think you may have chlamydia is essential. Regular testing is also recommended, even if you’re not experiencing any symptoms. The earlier you catch the infection, the easier it is to treat, and the less likely you are to unknowingly spread it to others. At the same time, getting treatment as quickly as possible helps reduce the risk of complications.

Protecting Yourself from Chlamydia and Its Potential Complications

Millions of people are diagnosed with chlamydia each year. It’s a common condition, but it’s also treatable. If you start noticing the types of discharge mentioned here, consider visiting your doctor and getting tested as soon as you can. A certain amount of clear or slightly cloudy discharge is normal with chlamydia, but if you have thick, yellow, greenish, red, or brownish discharge, it’s best to seek additional treatment.

In general, changes in the discharge and your symptoms are the most important issues to watch for. Any new developments could mean you have additional infections or other complications. Anytime something doesn’t seem quite right, don’t hesitate to reach out for help and answers to your questions.
